Dyslexia
Children with dyslexia have normal intelligence – It’s just that their brain processes language differently to other children....
If your child has a diagnosed learning difficulty such as Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, ADD or ADHD or just needs to catch up to others in their class, I can create an individualised program that will get results.
Our multi-sensory, highly structured approach is proven to be the most effective way to teach and improve a child’s reading, writing and spelling.
If your child has a learning difficulty/disability, they learn best through a systematic, synthetic phonics approach to teaching reading. A Whole language approach is not suitable for children with learning difficulties/disabilities.
Content covered includes matching phonemes (sounds) to graphemes (letters), blending through words to successfully decode, how to read in a phrased and fluent manner and literal, inferential and applied comprehension skills.
If your child has a learning difficulty/disability they need explicit, repeated exercises in handwriting, simple and complex sentence construction, punctuation and grammar, idea creation, information collation, and a knowledge of the different text types with matching sentence signposts for each text type. The learning of specific writing templates is a valuable tool for your child so as they can establish an internal framework to attach content and ideas to – especially if they have dysgraphia or significant difficulties with writing.
Spelling is a difficult area for all children with special needs. They learn best through a systematic, sequential spelling program based on phonics using a MSL (multi-sensory language) approach. Content covered includes matching phonemes (sounds) to graphemes (letters), short and long vowels, initial and final consonants, digraphs, simple and complex word families, base-words, suffixes and prefixes, spelling strategies and spelling rules.
Your child needs to know “What do I do if I can’t spell a word?” and have a sound knowledge of the most frequently used words so they can spell them automatically when writing.
If your child has a learning difficulty/disability they will benefit enormously from learning to Touch Type in primary school. Sallyteach encourages all of her students to learn to touch type through an internationally recognised program designed specifically for children with dyslexia and dysgraphia which enables them to touch type confidently up to 60 wpm upon completion.
This skill frees up mental space for the higher order thinking skills necessary for successful writing.
